Description: Municipal clerks play a critical role in preserving the integrity, history, and operational efficiency of their community cemeteries. This course provides a comprehensive, practical exploration of modern cemetery management, combining legal responsibilities, technology-driven solutions, and real world scenarios to help clerks navigate both routine tasks and complex challenges.
Participants will learn how to manage cemetery records using contemporary software tools; evaluate and implement mapping technologies such as GIS and GPR; and apply best practices for replatting, plot management, and interment documentation. Special attention will be given to handling sensitive issues including disinterment requests, historic plot purchases that remain unused, unmarked and unknown burial sites, and military headstone protocols.
The course also explores operational procedures related to pre sales, bulk lot purchases, and providing alternative burial options such as columbariums and niche walls. Through practical examples and peer based discussion, clerks will gain strategies to improve accuracy, ensure compliance, support grieving families, and plan for long term cemetery sustainability.
By the end of this session, participants will be equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to manage today’s cemeteries with professionalism, clarity, and compassion.
